Sustainable Salons - For Hair & beauty salons, barbers, dermal clinics, and pet groomers.

Did you know that salon foil is infinitely recyclable?! Yep, that's right...and the colour doesn't even need to be rinsed from foil to make it recyclable. Sustainable Salons divert salon waste from going to landfill, and so far, the network has diverted a whopping 188,600kg of salon metals from landfill.

There are 22 salons, including some Beauty Salons and Barbers in Christchurch who are already a part of Sustainable Salons.

We also heard about an entrepreneur down south trialling silicon ‘foils’- hope that works and goes wide as then we don't have to use all the foil in the first place!

  1. In the meantime #noexcuses for salons.
  2. Tell your hairdresser – imagine the difference it will make!
  3. I’ll be telling my dog groomer to compost the dog hair too.

#13 What can I do with Human Hair and Pet Fur?

Is it just us that think about these things? This may seem an odd one but we and our animals shed and loose a lot of hair and fur! Did you know that most of that could be composted rather than filling land?!

  • If it is only a little bit, put it outside for birds – just throw it on the lawn and they love it for their nests.

  • You can also put it in the green bin and it is also good in the home compost. It is organic after all!

  • Dyed/treated hair where chemicals have been used, should go in the red bin though. Another good reason for you, salons and groomers to go to natural products.

  • Not down the loo. It just clogs up with all of the other nasties people shouldn’t put down there. The 3 Ps: Poop, Pee and Paper (toilet) only please.

  • Vacuum dust and bags are best in the red bin, due to fibres from synthetic carpets and clothing etc

Exciting news for Salons and Groomers they can compost the natural hair & fur they collect. Imagine what your own salon produces, let alone across New Zealand.  There is also a new Australian scheme that takes used foils and other salon products to recycle too!  Loving finding out about this as I always feel guilty having my hair done in foils but my hairdresser didn't have an alternative. She does now.
